This book is the second in the Harry McCoy series. I haven't read the first and whilst I think it probably would be better to read them in order - there were points where I felt like I was missing the back story - everything became clear in the end.
The book is set in 1970s Glasgow, and the city is a central character in all her grimy, gritty glory. Alan Parks vividly channels the city's dark side with drugs, gangs and violence and so many familiar locations.
The main character is Harry McCoy; a detective with a flawed and dark past, one which catches up with him in this book. The book starts with a violent murder, and Harry being called back to work after a period of leave (enforced, as a result of a previous case). Harry mixes the good with the bad - he associates with known criminals, takes drugs and isn't afraid to use his fists during an interrogation but he seems to care about justice, fairness and standing up for those that can't stand up for themselves. The murders continue, and Harry battles to catch the perpetrator(s) whilst also battling his own demons. This is a thoroughly readable thriller, although possibly not for the squeamish reader - the author doesn't skimp on violent details. If you like your crime thrillers grim and gritty, then this one comes highly recommended. I'm off to read the first book, and I can't wait for the third!
