Glasgow in 1973: the city is drab, cold, gritty and crime-ridden. The story takes place over the course of 10 days.
A psychopath has just murdered a popular footballer, and this is described in minute, gory detail. Detective Harry McCoy believes the killer was motivated by jealousy, as the footballer was the fiancé of the local gangster's daughter; the killer was a former employee and she had already spurned his declarations of love, which turned to stalking before he was sacked. McCoy fears she will be the next victim.
In a side story, McCoy has a score to settle with a man (only Glasgow's highest ranking Police Inspector !) who abused him as a boy growing up in care. The man helping him, also a victim of the same abuse, is a thug looking to take over as king of the patch.
