I hadn't read the first Harry McCoy novel but found that this wasn't a huge issue as the story carried me along reasonably well without reading the prequel.

This book follows McCoy's investigation into the violent murder of a young footballer, who is found with an inscription carved into his chest. More bodies then start to appear and the hunt is on for the killer.

The author lets us into the secret of who the murderer is quite early in the book which is unusual for this kind of book. However, I didn't find that it particularly spoilt it for me. There is a twist at the end which I didn't see coming which was good.

The book is based in 1970's Scotland and the police procedures certainly reflect this period of time. McCoy's investigation into the murders are often done with his fists and there is a definite feeling of violence and mayhem around the story.

I will look out for further books by this author.
