I should probably start by saying that I was quite anxious to start this book. I read a review of this stating that it really didn’t work well as a stand-alone book and seeing as @readersfirst kindly gifted me this copy, I wasn’t sure if I should buy the previous instalment first.
⠀⠀
It genuinely didn’t affect my reading however. As with most crime novels, it followed a complete narrative and although my relationship to the characters and my understand of them was potentially not as fully formed as it could have been, it’s only left me wanting to read the first book instead! ⠀⠀
This truly is a proper noir and gruesome corner of the genre. At points I had to take breaks from the book as the description was so vivid! I found this insanely readable, and my mind kept drifting back to it when I was doing other things. It’s a fairly simple plot and narrative style but it kept me guessing throughout.
⠀⠀
This handles some tough themes such as mental health, police brutality, and an awful lot of violence but if you’re looking for something a little darker - then check this series out!
