Thanks to Readers First for supplying me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Gritty crime noir set in 1970s Glasgow. Protagonist, DI Harry McCoy, is forced back to work early following the gruesome murder of an up and coming footballer, Charlie Jackson, who was engaged to Elaine Scobie, daughter of aging local mobster Jake Scobie.
It is the second book in the series but easily stands alone. The first book, Bloody January, gives some great background about complex copper McCoy, dangerous, ganglord Cooper and Chief Inspector Murray which gives significant insights into their relationships which I thinks does helps the reader to understand the bonds McCoy has with each, especially between McCoy and Cooper, as at first, it is a very unlikely pairing.
The end is honestly, completely ridiculous, and a big let down was, the killer being mentally unwell being used as a narrative device to explain all the killers behaviour which is a dated approach.
It has got a great pace and was on the whole a fun read, as it is clearly not meant to be taken too seriously, with an unexpected depth to the main character that I really enjoyed.
Warning – lot of sex, drugs, violence and a ton of bad language!
Finally note - I appreciated that there was more that just a couple of women written in (male writers often, I don't know, forget we exist?) but my only critique is it would have been great to see a woman there just being a woman and not having to be having sex with one (sometime more!) of the men.
