The dramatic opening is confusing for someone who hasn't read the previous two books in the trilogy so I don't think this book will stand alone, and I personally don't find this type of story line interesting enough to seek out the first two novels. However, the action is fast paced and the dialogue sounds realistic, while the book cover seems an exciting match for the young adult fantasy described.
