I hate, hate, hate self help books, I find them irrelevant, hippy trippy or preachy.
But this one sounded really interesting, more mainstream and accessible to anyone as opposed to lofty ideals and big, sweeping or dramatic life changes.
I actually really enjoyed this considering I'm a hater of the genre.
Some of the lifestyle tips was quite practical and sensible and the author surprisingly mentioned a hell of a lot of different theories and health aspects ranging from science, more naturalistic and small lifestyle adjustments.
Topics ranged from yoga, exercise, diet, fitness, how to mange pain, discussions on loneliness, mindfulness, meditation, getting out and about, enjoying nature, sleep habits, setting time aside to recharge.
All tiny adjustments that many are probably either experiencing or if being honest they are guilty of.
Personally for me I think I need to disengage so much phone checking and social media time and being accessible to others and their needs or expectations of me so will start to adjust that personally for MY own benefit as I can see I spend way too much time on others to the detriment or my own wants, needs and hobbies these days so will apply that and cut back and set time aside WHEN I will get back to people and be more mentally present around my family.
Also the sleep chapter fascinated me and will try and apply some ideas to my erratic sleep pattern.
So even I, a self help manual hater found at least ONE or two things that made me think and reevaluate.
The only thing that irritated me but I knew this before reading was that the author was a Christian so it's peppered HEAVILY with religious allusions and ways to apply faith to my life, that is the last tip I will ever apply and as an atheist I found this level of religious reference jarred with me and did somewhat spoil my enjoyment but hey, I take out of it what I want and leave the rest so after a time just totally ignored that aspect of it.
This will not convert me to go out and fill a bookcase with self help manuals but I surprised myself by enjoying the conversational, friendly and witty tone of the author's writing.
