This is a comforting, counting Christmas story that is beautifully illustrated. I liked the familiarity of the counting verse throughout the book and the young readers/listeners attention was kept through the lift the flap task of finding the penguins.
Counting down is so important as children have much more experience of counting up than down, so having this fun practice is really essential to their learning and enjoyment. The introduction of other animals was a welcome addition too and we liked noticing and reading about the activities the animals were doing. There was a short pause of sadness but such a happy ending was a delight as all penguins and mum are together to decorate the tree on ….special day ( trying not to give away book spoilers!)
This is definitely an enjoyable Christmas read but I’m sure it will probably be enjoyed at any time of the year!
