With its bright and colourful Christmas-themed illustrations of five little penguins having fun in a winter wonderland, with its lift-up flaps which reveal other woodland creatures sharing in the fun and with its simple, rhyming narrative, I think any pre-school child would be delighted to receive this book in their Christmas stocking. The repetitive theme to the looking for and counting the penguins as the story develops feels entirely age-appropriate as most very young children respond well to the simplicity of this sort of interactive storytelling and the excitement of revealing what’s hidden behind the flaps. There is extra narrative on the reverse of each flap to enhance the illustration which is revealed, something which not only enhances the unfolding story, but also provides the adult reading the story to the child with opportunities to encourage the youngster to interact with what they are seeing and hearing … a lovely way of making learning fun!
A delightful story which is bound to become a favourite with any child lucky enough to be given a copy.
