Five Little Penguins caught my eye initially due to the cute artwork on the front and back cover of penguins frolicking in the snow. When I discovered it was a rhyming lift-the-flap book with a festive feel, I knew it would be a fun addition to the home library.

The writing style is catchy as it’s in short poetic bursts which read aloud easily, and would keep young children engaged with the rhythm.

There’s lots of interaction to be had with this book as there’s lots of different sized flaps to lift when searching for the penguins.

I like how it not only encourages reading and the use of pictures and flaps to tell the story, but also introduces basic counting skills for younger children.

The illustrations are beautiful, lots of nature is included, not just penguins. Discovering the hidden snowy owl and the Beaver family hanging up their Christmas stockings inside their igloo are two lovely examples of how delightful this story is.

Being a lift-the-flap book, which isn’t a board book but a standard paperback, I would say this is suitable for children who have learnt to respect and treat books with care. A toddler under 18 months would most likely tempted to tear the flaps from the pages, so I’d say this was suitable for ages 3+ for unsupervised reading time. Or around 2 years reading with an adult/older child.

Overall I recommend this book for its artwork, the simplicity of the counting within the story and the interaction that lift the flap books create.
