Five Little Penguins is a very sweet lift the flap children’s book with a Christmas theme.
The main words follow the very familiar “five little ducks” theme of going out each day and one less coming back each time. The reader is encouraged to look under the flaps to find the penguins and inevitably finds other Christmas creatures instead. Fortunately there is the requisite happy ending with all five little penguins coming back home to mother penguin!
The illustrations are beautiful with lots going on over each page and plenty to find under each flap. Young children will really enjoy spotting different details each time they snuggle up to read the book.
The only thing that lets this book down slightly is the quality of the flaps themselves. I found them a little flimsy and because they are stuck on I feel they won’t last long with little hands. I really agonised over whether to drop to 4 stars on that basis but I don’t think that would be fair on the overall book.
