I liked the way the book's prologue pitches the reader right into the story making you wonder what has led to these people being at sea in a small boat. I also enjoyed the imaginative descriptions such as the image of the wind 'pummelling the water into a new substance...a landscape of moving mountains'. The swift change of timeline and location to Cornwall some years earlier creates intriguing questions about what happened in the intervening years. I liked the independent-minded Jenny and the arrival of the mysterious Mr. Black. With its mention of Four Turnings, the novels of Daphne du Maurier came to mind and Jenny's exploits at highway robbery conjured up thoughts of the film The Wicked Lady starring Margaret Lockwood and James Mason. Great stuff!
