This is novel was based on the true story of a convict named Mary Bryant. Set in the 1780s in South Cornwall, this novel follows Jenny Trelawney (a highway woman) who was sentenced to death after stealing from a woman. Jenny Trelawney had no family, money or job. Jenny and two other highway women (Bea and Elinor) are instead sent to colonies in Australia. It is obvious that Jenny is a strong and very capable mother who was able to support her child while on her adventures.
But a famine begins in the colony, and she must find a way to escape (that being a small boat).
Lots of research must have been done for this novel. But the writing was sometimes dragging, especially towards the end.
Overall, this was an amazing novel to introduce me to a new genre (historical fiction).
