Penmor South Cornwall 1783, Jenny Trewlaney's father is killed whilst fishing. Her mother is inconsolable and the family fall on harder times. Jenny's sister works as a scullery maid but Jenny must now also find employment. Unfortunately Jenny becomes a highway woman but after robbing a woman for her bonnet with two other women Bea and Elinor her luck runs out. The 3 are sentenced to be hung but this is changed to transportation to Australia. Life is tough on board and Jenny will do all she can to survive. On landing with a baby Charlotte, she joins forces with fellow convict Dan Gwyn, a fellow Cornish man and as good a fisherman as Jenny. They marry and set about making a living and are invaluable to the community. Elinor makes their lives worse with her jealousy and the only way out of the hell they are living is for Dan, Jenny and Charlotte and their son Emanuel to escape with a selected few prisoners. After many months at sea they are recaptured and returned to England but Dan and the children die on the cruel journey back.
The book goes on to tell the story of Jenny's life in London and Cornwall.

This is based on the true story of Mary Bryant, a woman who I want to know more about. This is a fabulous read.
