Jenny is a young woman in eighteenth century south of England who has much to deal with. Needing to support her mother, she has to resort to highway robbery. This is the initial part of the novel, Jenny’s back story before her life in Australia.
This is an ambitious novel dealing in such themes as identity, class and poverty. Jenny is a lively and intelligent character who has to be inventive to survive. There is little place in her world for social niceties. Her character is likeable as are the jumble of associates she meets along the way.
This is an entertaining read. At times there are sadnesses, death and hunger, for example. There are also comic moments as Jenny challenges the assumptions people make about her as a young woman.
