1783 Cornwall, England and a young girl Jenny has just lost her father to the sea and she is left with no other option but to steal to survive. She falls in with a highwayman and before long she is a highway woman. After being caught and sentenced to death, she is given a reprieve and along with two other women is "transported beyond the seas for seven years". What follows is a traumatic and harrowing journey taking several months, during which time Jenny finds out she is pregnant. As the story unfolds we find Jenny living a hard life in a community full of soldiers and convicts, she is married and has a child and pregnant with another. Everyone is only looking out for themselves and she meets up with a native woman who tries to show her about the food she will need to survive. A plan is drawn up to escape, will Jenny and her young family survive? What follows is both a harrowing, sad and almost unbelievable story which has been based on the true life story of Mary Bryant, a convict who was transported to Australia. I really enjoyed this book, a great adventure story, well worthy of 5 stars.
