I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was the perfect blend of high-stakes action and a deeply human story. The characters were well realised, and I liked the choice to create an original character based on Mary Bryant, rather than putting thoughts in her head.
The writing style was good, reflective of the time period without descending into incomprehensibility by trying to mimic how people spoke then too closely.
The plot was well paced, and though there were times in the book where not much was happening it never felt too slow or boring, and it was just slow enough to give a break from the action, while allowing time to examine and develop the characters.
The epilogue, while likely historically inaccurate was a good choice, and it gave an ending that felt earned.
Overall, a good read, and highly recommended to anyone interested in historical fiction!
