This is a very impressive start to Lucy Hope's debut novel. Fledgling's is set in earlier times when superstition was rife and there was a great deal of belief in otherworldly beings. Cassie lives in an ancient house built on the top of rocks by her great great grandfather with her mother and father and grandmother who is now very ill. Cassie looks after the house and her ailing grandmother as her mother is an opera singer and her father suffers trauma from a war. Cassie's one true friend is Raphael who she calls on to come immediately on the fateful stormy evening when a cherub is blown into her room. Cassie and Raphael wonder how this has happened and how they can care for the cherub so look for a book in the library. Can the cherub's arrival have a deeper meaning and will other beings arrive to look for the cherub. Very much looking forward to reading the rest of Fledgling and discovering the story behind the cherub's arrival and how it will affect the lives of everyone living, and connected to, the house.
