Fledgling is a great debut from Lucy Hope for younger readers. A gothic novel full of magical and dark elements

Cassie lives in a peculiar house in the middle of the Bavarian Forest in 1900, with her ill Grandma, her distant mother and her absent minded father with a love of taxidermy. he house she lives in is full of engineering marvels, which will become integral to the story, and I think young readers will enjoy the way the house is built and what it can do.

When a cherub is blown in to Cassie’s bedroom window during a storm it sets off a series of events which will lead her and Raphael, her best friend, down a new and dangerous path. Cassie is an entertaining protagonist who is desperate for love and family, which gives her the space to allow the cherub into her life easily. I also enjoyed her friendship with Raphael and the way they connected through Morse Code

The story does start and end a little abruptly but I enjoyed the way it moved along with twists and turns along the way. I think younger readers will enjoy the mystery, the characters and the surprises that it brings. It’s well written and is a page turner, particularly for these dark winter nights
