Whimsical
Fledgling is a perfect read for the autumn season as it’s filled with spooky suspense and wintery images. We follow Cassie and her friend Raphael trying to look after a Cherub that has flew through her window and uncover the mystery of where the Cherub came from and why it’s there. Immediately I was attached to the characters and felt all their pain throughout the story. The book deals with some heavier themes for what seems like a middle grade audience. Although, I struggled to place if the target audience was middle grade or YA. Grief and caring for a dying loved one where handled well.
The Bavarian Forest setting was beautiful and really added to the whimsy of the story. It felt like reading a darker fairy tale like Brothers Grimm but for a younger audience. I loved Cassie’s family house too! The imagery of a tall house with bits added on swaying in the wind on a mountaintop was brilliant. And the inside of a taxidermist’s study crossed with engineer’s workshop has me hooked.
A great read for any middle grade or YA reader looking for something mysterious and autumnal.
