This is a very detailed account of the time Joanna Palani spent fighting against ISIS in the Middle East. The fighting was fierce and there were many casualties but this book goes much further than describing life on the front line. The author gives the readers an insight into the effect of joining the fight for freedom on her personal life and how her decisions have impacted on every aspect of her life.

The situation in the Middle East is incredibly complicated and, in spite of the explanations of the various factions given throughout the book, I still find it extremely confusing. The book is titled Freedom Fighters to indicate that this is primarily a fight for freedom however freedom means different things to different people and this book highlights that fact. There are many issues addressed such as the struggle to end the repression of women, the right to have different beliefs and worship accordingly and freedom of speech. The author was extremely brave to follow her conscience and join the fight for freedom and equally brave to tell her story.
