The book starts with a chapter from Danny, who, we find has died and is doing his piece from beyond the grave. The story then flips between characters, then and now. Mainly Ruby, but also Ally and Steph.
The "crew" all were good friends, back in the day. Ruby, Ally, Aaron, Emmett, Murphy, Tara and Danny. Some were paired up, some weren't (officially). Things happen around graduation time and Ruby leaves to go to university in New York and doesn't come home to visit until she is called by Ally to say that Danny has died and she needs to come home for the funeral. At his wake his mother reveals that he has left each of them an envelope. This contains a secret they have been keeping from the others and if they don't share the secret, he has arranged for it to go public.
