Friends and Traitors is the eighth book in the "Troy of the Yard" series by John Lawton.
This book can though be read as a standalone novel especially as the first 80 to 90 pages provide you with all the backstory that you need. Even if you have read all the previous books in the series the backstory will help you refresh your memory etc and they aren't a drag on the book.
As with all the previous books the author weaves in real life people to the narrative with Guy Burgess being the main protagonist this time around.
The story is seen from Troy's side throughout and the characterisation is as strong as ever. The book moves along at a decent although not hurried pace and as you get towards the end keeps you reading for another "final" twist.
