The opening is full of a sense of danger, suspense and helplessness - a great hook to draw me in as well as being a good mood-match for the cover illustration. The start of a new detective series is always welcome to fans and this looks like a great introduction to Detective Inspector Monica Kennedy working in the Scottish Highlands. The style is mature and sure-footed so it's hard to believe this is a debut novel.
