Normally detective type novels are not my thing, but as it is set in Scotland I thought I would give it a try. The cover of the book is just what you would expect, the detective looking out over the countryside where the crime took place, nothing that would grab my attention at first glance but not terrible either.

The murder happens right at the start of the book which is refreshingly different from those that spend too long on character development before anything happens. This means you get to know the characters as the plot develops and so far there is a good balance between the two.

I also like the fact that so far there are not too many characters around to confuse the initial plot development. Although I am sure other characters will be introduced as the story develops and the plot thickens.

I also like the setting of the book as it is set in a part of Scotland that I know and love which peaked my interest and was one of the reasons I read the first impression.

As I said this is usually not a genre of books that I would read. However, the first impression has peaked my interest and I do intend purchasing the book as I would like to read the rest.
