Thank you so much to Readers First and Penguin Vintage for allowing me an advanced copy of this novel. I feel extremely privileged to have been choose.

Ok, on with my review. My copy arrived today, and I immediately started reading, I have actually just put it down to write my review. I am not waiting until I have finished.

D.I. Monica Kennedy actually reminds me of the character Karen Pirie from the Val McDermid books. She's coming across to me as an extremely strong minded independent woman, who knows her job inside out and takes no prisoners (seriously, no pun intended there!)
She's a single mum with a high profile career. She's also extremely tell! The image I have of her is Xena, Warrior Princess! Only in a long coat, and Scottish.

Like Pirie, Kennedy has been in the job so long she's become on the surface hardened to the sights and level of violence that she's privy to on a daily basis. I have so far to discover if she has a weak spot, although I suspect it to be her daughter. She's extremely driven and runs on adrenaline I think.

The cover design looks extremely inviting yet at the same time sinister and atmospheric.

Not knowing anything about the author, I decided on a quick Google search and discovered that G.R. Halliday is male. Nothing wrong with that, I was just slightly expecting G.R. Halliday to be a nom de plume of an already successful author trying out a different genre of writing. I was also convinced that the author was female, simply because most novels with female lead characters are usually penned by females.
It's actually a refreshing change from the norm.

If the book continues at the same fast pace it set of at, it's going to be brilliant. I hope in the future there is more Monica Kennedy novels.
