I enjoyed this Scottish crime thriller. I liked the bleak and cold but beautiful landscape, the troubled detectives (and unofficial detectives!) and the slightly crazy truth behind the killings. I also thought it was great that the lead detective was female, and physically a bit bizarre, which adds interest to the plot. The action was pacy, and the book, easily divided into very short chapters, rather difficult to put down. On the other hand, I did feel that there was nothing here that hasn't been done before - the detective-struggling-with-personal-life is a common theme of this kind of book, as is theme of the police officers' superiors insisting on their own viewpoint and not listening to the central characters (who are then forced to sneakily investigate off-the-record...) A good read nonetheless.
