I really enjoyed this first book in a new detective series involving the cases of Detective Inspector Monica Kennedy. I loved the gritty rawness expressed in the book when certain characters interacted with each other. It had a great first chapter that really drew me into the rest of the story as more teenage boys are found dead or missing.
The descriptions of the Scottish Highlands really help you to imagine just how remote and isolating the area could be and how someone could just go missing and never been seen again.
I did feel like I enjoyed reading about the character of Michael the social worker and his part in the story probably more than I did Monica so I would hope that in future books we get to know more of Monica’s back story that was hinted at in this first book so that we feel more invested in her.
From the Shadows is a good first installment in what looks set to be a great crime series and I look forward to continuing to read about D.I Monica Kennedy’s crime investigations.
