This book is so very intense, fast-paced but carefully written: Kate London is considerate of the hard-boiled details that make every detectove story. Gallowstree Lane follows two young men who find themselves in a knife-crime incident. It could happen to anyone, except these two might be involved in gang-related activities. It's as heartbreaking as it's the real thing: there is no sheilding the reader from the sad bits.

Young kids forced to grow up too fast, forced to look out for themselves: it's sad. And London manages to write of it thoughtfully with consideration for the thoughts and prejudices of all the characters involved.

This isn't the tired formulaic, predictable crime novel. It's better.

P.s. I love the cover: whole justice may be black and white. The real world, and crime, never is.
