Gallowstree Lane is a human drama, a crime novel with various human relationships and their complexities mixed in for good measure.

This book demands to be read, you start and you can’t put it down. Kate London has worked as a police officer and this experience leads to an authentic, real tone that many crime novels don’t have.

Ryan, the central character is a teenager, angry, lost and keen to avenge his mate Spencer who was killed in the gang warfare which is the background of this novel. We learn about the undercover police operation in place to try and bring the gang’s arms trafficking to an end. Interspersed we have Lizzie, a cop with a small child, trying to juggle the obligations of motherhood with a job she loves. Her child’s father - also a police officer - is able to navigate his responsibilities with greater ease due to his sex. This novel highlights that there is still much to be done for gender equality, whilst also proving that women can be as successful at their careers as men.

A complex, beautifully written drama that you won’t want to put down!
