Oh wow! if ever there was an opening chapter to entice readers to discover more, then this is it! Spies, Nordic Noir and some good old fashioned tradecraft, what's not to love! The opening chapter introduces the reader to Agneta and Stellan, an elderly Swedish couple, who have been minding their grandchildren while their parents take a summer break. The parents have now returned to collect their children. It is a sweltering hot day. The garden is a riot of colour alive with hollyhocks, blue delphiniums and bittersweets.
Without spoiling what happens next, the reader is suddenly plunged into a story of espionage, the potential activation of a terrorist cell and (what I think) is the German equivalent of MI6. Enter local police officer Sara Nowak who has been called in to investigate a murder, and you can already predict, that she has no idea what she is getting into! A thoroughly enjoyable couple of chapters and I want to read more!
