With a sticker on the book describing it as “For Fans Of I Am Pilgrim”, a book I loved, how could I resist? And this proved to be a real page-turner - it reminded me of Daniel Silva, another must-read author for me - a gripping spy thriller with a strong historical element.

You can’t help but be intrigued by a book that starts with a woman waving off her children and grandchildren at her home, receiving a phone call, shooting her husband in the head and then leaving the house and apparently disappearing. Sara, a police officer who normally works on prostitution cases, is drawn in to the case as a former friend of the family and uncovers a trail that stretches back to the Cold War.

Sara is a complicated but intriguing character; the book keeps you guessing as nothing is quite what it seems and I was gripped right to the end. In some ways it moves at quite a slow pace but it allows the reader to absorb all the details of what is a complex and fascinating story that reveals itself gradually and continues to surprise all the way to the conclusion.
