The striking pink cover sets the scene. This book is very "now" where the girls are living a life attached to their 'phones and messaging each other constantly. It also highlights the modern fears of the ever present social media risk - if you do something silly it is online immediately. It also shows how difficult it is to control cyber bullying in schools. The book has a fundamental message threading through it. It is that young girls have loads of anxieties in their life, appearance being a constant worry, acceptance, rejection, and low self esteem. Lara Bloom is a disaster and is always getting into a mess, but she is also captain of a very successful school girls football team. Through all the ups and downs of her life, Lara learns that to "glow up" is to learn that you can develop the self confidence, and self worth, for your own sake, and not for the sake of boys, siblings, parents, or what is accepted as the norm in our society. A very enjoyable book, well written, and flows quickly along.
