‘Good Eggs’ follows three generations of an Irish family from Dun Laoghaire. Kevin Gogarty is recently unemployed and struggles being a stay-at-home father to his four children, particularly his teenage daughter Aideen. His elderly mother Millie has been caught shoplifting again, and Kevin feels he has no choice but to bring in Sylvia, a caretaker, to keep an eye on her. Unbeknown to Kevin, Sylvia has ulterior motives, and soon causes the biggest crisis the Gogarty family has seen yet.

At over 400 pages, this book was a chunky debut! I loved that the chapters alternated between the three characters and allowed us to read from multiple perspectives. The Gogarty family as a whole are realistic and relatable, but Millie was the star of the show for me. She is cheeky, rebellious and independent... and exactly the type of old person I aspire to be!

I think the book could have been improved by being a bit shorter. I wasn’t clear what the main storyline was until halfway through, and there seemed to be a lot of build up to the incident involving Sylvia. Although I loved the ending, unfortunately it felt like a lot of the action was condensed into the final 100 pages.

If you enjoy books about dysfunctional families, and you’re after something lighthearted and amusing, this would be a great book to pick up.
