The book primarily revolves around the three main characters of grandmother Millie Gogarty, her stepson Kevin and his teenage daughter, Aideen, with each character narrating separate paragraphs. This works well most of the time but sometimes it seems to jump around a bit, which makes it slightly less comfortable to read.

The foundation of the book is the inter-family relationships between Kevin, who is out of work, teetering on the edge of a mid-life crisis and left to deal with all the family issues whilst his wife follows her high-flying career, Millie, who is very eccentric 83 year old into shop-lifting and Aideen, a very unhappy teenager and her dysfunctional relationship with her twin and other siblings.

It is a likable enough read but ends up becoming slightly farcical, without being humorous enough to get away with it, which spoils it slightly. I also think the characters could have been better developed, which may have helped with adding a bit of realism to the storyline.
