I liked this book, but I didn’t love it.

Good Eggs is a multi-generational book with intertwining stories which are told from the viewpoints of three main characters: Grandmother Millie Gogarty, her stepson Kevin and his teenage daughter, Aideen.

The premise of the book is that Kevin is worried about both his step-mother and his daughter - Millie has been caught shop-lifting and Aideen is at constant loggerheads with her twin sister. Also, he has been unemployed for some time and can’t seem to find another job in journalism. Millie just wants to get on with enjoying her old age in her own eccentric way, and Aideen is just trying to find herself. Kevin is blatantly hovering around whether to have a full-blown mid-life crisis or not…

The chapters alternate between characters and most of the time the story flows, although it does also jump around a bit too - it just feels a bit messy in places, especially Kevin’s chapters.

All in all the book was readable, but it didn’t really grab me and drag me in. Indeed, some of Kevin’s storylines felt a bit superfluous at times - I didn’t really like his character. Millie and Aideen, however, were both strong, likeable characters and I enjoyed their individual journeys. Taking Kevin out of the main narrative would’ve made this book better, I think.
