was frustrated by the general treatment of Jane Tennison, but as this is set in the 1970’s this was the normal sexist behaviour in a male oriented profession. I thought the terrorist bombings in London at Convent Garden station were very well written. Jane seems very much traumatised by the horrific explosion and its aftermath she had witnessed. It was interesting to read how the IRA operated with their code words and agents.

I found this to be a thrilling read Lynda La Plante has created one of the greats of fiction in Jane Tennison.

Jane Tennison has joined the ‘Dip’ square as she feels this to be a way into the Flying squad. She is part of an operation to catch pickpockets on the London Underground. She is subject to patronising, sexist behaviour from her male colleagues and as this is set in 1970’s London this was, unfortunately the norm. As is the use of racist, derogatory language throughout. However, this is not just for effect but a reflect of the time and builds the atmosphere creatively. I want to read more....
