It has been a very long time since I've read a Lynda La Plante book and reading this has left me wondering why I left it so long. This is the third in the Tennison series, charting the early career of Jane Tennison, before the Prime Suspect days. I haven't read the previous two and aside from some references to a previous case, there would have been no reason to think that you need to read them, it works as a stand alone book.
It's set in March 1976, a period at the height if the IRA bombing campaign in London. A bomb goes off at Covent Garden tube station and Jane is caught up in the thick of it. As a consequence she has some involvement with the bomb squad. At the same time she buys a flat, acquires a flatmate and bumps into someone from the training college with whom she forges a friendship. Edge of the seat stuff in places.
