You can tell the author writes for young adults as the flashbacks to teenage years are convincingly done.
I found the section I read unsettling. I think that is the intention. This novel seems to blend mystery with a chic lit feel. The result so far is entertaining. This is due mostly to the narrator's sharp wit which makes the whole thing very enjoyable.
I've read a couple of Australian authors lately. The mix of landscape and weather is often used so well and this is no exception. Isolating characters on the island with strange notes pushed under doors heightens tension well.
The flashback section cut off just at the point where I really wanted to know more. This was very well done as I already found myself caring about the characters and wanting to know what had happened.
