A slow paced spy romp with a peanut butter theme to this extract.

Characters are typical of this type, an angry stupid American, the intelligent British spy, double crossing Russians.

The plot failed to grasp my attention, the story of a bunch off rag-tag allied soldiers busting over the boarder to trade with Commies. There wasn't any suspense over the smuggling, no fear of capture, it could have been a pleasant Sunday drive.

The characters are ok, but they dont stand to scrutiny. Joe Wilderness is supposed to be a spy with morals, saving the commy lad from a beating, sympathising with the defeated homeless ex-wehrmacht soldiers. But then he describes a female soviet Major as having ‘tits like Jane Russell’, maybe he just hates women, or maybe this is supposed to reflect the view that men had before political correctness ‘went mad’. This just isnt realistic, I would prefer a pervy character than a flawed one.

In conclusion, its not Bond, it doesn't capture that era or manage tongue in cheek humour well.
