I became interested in this book because it said in the description that it was set right in the middle of the swinging sixties, and I love anything to do with that era. However, the poor characters in this book are as far from the swinging sixties as you can get. This is because the story tells us of another side of the nineteen sixties, this is the world of cold war spying. Poor old Joe Wilderness is sent to Finland where nothing exciting was happening at the time. But after meeting some old acquaintances of his, Joe got into some very serious smuggling.
There were some refences to the culture of the 1960s when they were watching films from the UK. These were the sort of cheeky comedy films like the `Carry On' films and kitchen sink dramas like `Saturday night and Sunday morning'.
