This is the third Joe Wilderness spy novel, I hadn't read the other two, but that didn't matter - this works well as a standalone book.
Hammer to Fall starts off in East Berlin, 1948 and jumps forwards and backwards between the fifties and sixties. Some of the places covered are Berlin, London, Vienna and quite a bit of Finland. You need to keep your wits about you and concentrate on this one!
Having said that, I really enjoyed this book - I liked the writing style, with some short and some longer chapters and the book being spilt into separate sections; the main character Joe Wilderness was immediately likeable, and the supporting cast were all strongly written. I could easily visualise scenes as they happened.
I would definitely recommend this if you enjoy Cold War spy stories. I'm planning to seek out the first and second in the series now...
