London in the swinging sixties, and the action takes us to a Europe and a trail of deception which manages to be both thrilling but also charmingly comic.

This atmosphere is created by the jocular but effective British spy, Joe Wilderness (my first introduction to Wilderness, who I understand has featured in other novels by the same writer). Something of a maverick operating within the secret service, we see him amble across Europe (from Finland to Berlin, both described incredibly evocatively - I could feel the cold in the Nordic territory and then picture the 1960's streets of Berlin).

I enjoyed the locations and the cast of characters, and the "fun" tone at times, even when the underlying issues were at times relatively dark.

Now turning to read more of Lawton's in the same series - rare for me with this type of novel, so praise indeed!
