It did take me a little while to get into it, as I havent read the previous two books in the series (and to be honest, I dontreally read books of this genre), however it does work well as a standalone if you wanted to just jump straight in.

It was enjoyable and exciting, and was very typical in its description of British culture in the 60s, but not painfully so. And explored various countries across Europe (and Russia) from a very British perspective.

The story was complex without being complicated and get me interested at every turn. Sometimes I find Spy stories can get too ridiculous with twists and turns, but this had enough to be intriguing without being too hard to keep up with.

Joe Wilderness is a brilliant character, full of life and energy, but finds himself in mundane situations /missions, and following him out of this in the ways only he can, also provides great humour too.
