Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin is the story of, unsurprisingly, Hana Khan a 24 year old South Asian Muslim woman living in Toronto, Canada. Hana works two jobs, one in her failing family halal restaurant and as an intern for a local radio station.

I must say that I was not keen on this book for its first quarter. I did not initially feel emotionally connected to Hana and I was not bothered or cared enough about the outcomes of her life. But I decided to stick with it and I was glad I did. The plot grew on me, as did Hana and the other characters. Ultimately I found it a different and refreshing read. I liked the Canadian back drop, the Muslim cultural/food/clothing references and the radio setting. There are some significant and deep underlying topics throughout as well as lighter moments which gives a good mix. I was glad I persisted with it.
