Our protagonist, Hana Khan, is a flawed character. It makes her feel more real, as if you're reading about your neighbor's life. She is neither the perfect Muslim who sets unrealistic standards for the rest of the world's non-Muslim population, nor the worst, who throws her culture, family, and religion under the bus in the name of "fitting in."Despite not having the same lived experiences, Hana does not dismiss any aspect of her life and speaks of her family's history and stories with respect. This exists as a personal narrative and a storey that isn't solely about our suffering as Muslims. It's a fun storey about a girl who is carrying a lot of weight while juggling drama, Islamophobia, her dreams, and the restaurant owner across the street who is starting to get under her skin. I adored this book from start to finish, and I can't wait for the rest of the world to read it as well.
