This was a fun read told from the perspective of Hana, a south Asian Muslim woman in her twenties who was born and raised in Toronto. Her family encourage her to make her own choices and she’s very keen to break into radio work but so far she’s only obtained work as an intern and it’s obvious her boss makes prejudiced assumptions about her future. Hana also works hard supporting her family both by helping out at the family restaurant and helping to care for her dad who’s in poor health. When the restaurant is threatened by a new competitor Hana fights back however she struggles with her feelings towards the owner.

There’s no massive surprises in this, you can tell from chapter one the overall direction it’s going to head in however the story that takes you there is well told with strong characters, family surprises and events. Hana herself is a refreshing character and it’s interesting to see how she increasingly opens up to the sad realities of being a Muslim which you feel she’s been protected from in the past, 7/10
