This book is a realists' dream! Whilst some may argue that the Grump is a pessimist I read him as someone who doesn't understand the need for change when he is perfectly capable to do what he needs with what he's always had. In this respect the Grump is quite endearing, if a little irritable at times. I also found the Finnish references lacked their narrative points but that is on my behalf and didn't detract from the story at all. The style of writing is rather unique with no dialogue coming from the Grump directly but the audience reading his thoughts. At times this is confusing when trying to establish what has been said aloud and following the conversation but it becomes more familiar with ease. I feel like this is a very traditional book in its structure which tells the tale of a traditional man who will build his own coffin and write his own will, thank you very much.
