I was eager to read this book as it has been compared to 'A Man Called Ove'. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as I'd hoped as it didn't have the depth of characterization or subtlety found in Backmann's book.

It was very poignant in places and by the end of the book, I was able to understand the Grump's motivations more and what drove him to behave as he did. If you haven't already read 'A Man Called Ove', perhaps you will enjoy this book more as you won't be constantly comparing the two.

I enjoyed the dry humour of the book but felt that I missed some of the cultural references, which I suppose was inevitable. The translation doesn't seem to flow very easily either which meant that the language sometimes seemed stilted.

This is still worth a read though!
