Sophie Hannah has always been one of my favourite authors. Often, the plots to her novels seem inconceivable. Yet somehow, as the story unfolds, it becomes as real as if it's happening to someone you know. And that's another key point - the reality of the characters Sophie Hannah creates; they feel like old friends. Which in itself is ironic, based on this book's plot.
When I was halfway through, I thought to myself, "This isn't as good as her other books as it's so obvious what is going on!"... This is another of Sophie Hannah's best qualities as a writer because I was so unbelievably wrong. Not even close! I was convinced I'd worked it out and I'm sure you will too. Then Hannah throws in another twist to prove that no one is likely to guess the outcome.
The only reason I gave this 4 stars and not the full 5 is that it takes a twisted, complicated journey to reach its climax, then it is over within a chapter. I wish more had been explained; more had been understood. The epilogue goes some way to creating a satisfying ending, I just wanted a bit more explanation at the end. But after so many addictive, incredible stories from Hannah, perhaps I'm getting fussy!
